Children elope

girl-wearing-sunglassesMy favourite news story today was about the two children, aged six and seven, who set off to get married. They set off from Hannover, Germany on New Year’s Eve, determined to tie the knot under the African sun.

Waiting for a train to the airport, they aroused the attention of a guard who contacted police, possibly as their packing had included the essentials of sunglasses, a lilo, summer clothes and provisions.

Doing business on the web

There’s tons of stuff on the internet about web 2.0. This extract from Positively Glorius! is part of a very good article.

The basic point is that if you are there interacting with people, finding ways to help them, then the rest will fall into place. It’s not marketing, it’s involvement. If you tell me you can solve my problem, I may (but probably won’t) trust that you can and will. If you simply solve my problem or help me in another way, or even just connect with me on a personal level, I may (and probably will) trust you and continue to build a relationship. It may not lead to a financial gain from me immediately, or ever, but it will be a relationship. And those relationships are what will help you survive and grow.

The article talks about about some of the fears businesses have with interactivity on the web. Use this link to read the rest.

The packaging is the POS and the product

High School Musical storage box

High School Musical storage box

Genius! The packaging is the POS and the product. And then you have to make it yourself.

The medium High School Musical storage box when assembled is 290mm wide, 385mm deep and 190mm high. But of course you make it yourself from a flat-packed simple kit where the lid is the product box.

As with most character/film merchandise a healthy premium price is charged as well.

Let’s hope they don’t move into house sales!

Heineken comes out of the closet

Renowned for their great beer adverts, here is another one from Heineken that I really like.

It does slightly cross the boundary of plausibility as I suspect the girls reaction is a lot more realistic than the boys. But that’s the point isn’t it?

Sports marketing

london-wasps-logoWhat’s going to happen to sport in 2009? It seems that a lot of businesses will not be renewing their sponsorship of tournaments, teams and individual sports and men and women. I also expect that paying audiences at events will decline in 2009. Therefore there will be major reductions in revenue.

Logic says that the affected sports businesses will have to reduce their costs and/or market their businesses to grow income.

Reducing costs could be painful. Premiership footballers earning less is a possibility; and it has to be said they could probably survive at slightly lower income levels. But many of the infrastructure costs will be difiicult to shave in the short term.

Therefore marketing to gain more income seems an attractive alternative. And I can’t help thinking that this might not be too difficult. I’ve just tried to find the fixture information for a couple of rugby teams and it has been very hard work. So it was a pleasure to discover a gem of a rugby team website, London Wasps, who have done a marvelous job of providing relevant information in an easy way to find.

Perhaps if more sports businesses could follow this example they could see better gates. As a minimum fixture information should be easy to find and tickets easy to buy.

Dinner in the 70s

seventies-1970So, the plan is to have a 70s dinner party tonight. Our guests are invited and the costumes are ready.

The 70s was a really good decade for music; a really rich ten years for quality and diversity. The iPod is set up with a random playlist of great music from a variety of genres.

We’ve even created a period menu! Note: this has been selected for fun and amusement (and ease of preparation), not to compete with Delia Smith. Of course, if you experienced the seventies you may recall what a diverse decade it was.

Hors d’oeuvres
Ritz crackers with pate
Twiglets

Starter
Batchelors cream of tomato soup
Prawn cocktail

Main course
Steak
Chicken in a basket

Sweet
Black forest gateaux
After Eight mints

Drinks
Babycham with a glacé cherry
Party 7
Snowballs with a glacé cherry

This got me to thinking about food and beverage brands that have survived well since the 70s. Babycham is back in shops. After Eights never disappeared. Wine boxes are back on the shelves in Tesco. HP sauce lives on and Daddies is disappearing.

What 70s food and drinks brands would you have at your ‘period’ dinner party?

Wii on your television and the BBC wins

bbc-iplayer-logoI guess most Wii owners know that they can connect to the internet using the built in Wi-Fi internet capability. But not everyone realises that you can also use this to connect to BBC iPlayer, 4oD from Channel 4 and the rebranded service from ITV called iTV Player.

4oD is difficult to use via a Wii and the iTV service thinks the Wii is a mobile device. Full marks to the BBC who actually manage their video service to work via a games console. And it’s all included in the licence fee :-)
